Vision, Mission & Biblical Teaching

Write the vision Sometimes it is helpful to simply go back to the beginning. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Habakkuk 2:2-3 Write the vision that which has been revealed. Make it plain In large legible characters. Upon tablet Not iPads. So that a runner may read it So intelligible as to be easily read by anyone running past. Relevant Communication

Relevant Communication Communication /kəmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/ Noun The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing or using some other medium. Features of Communication Communication goes both ways! Forms of Communication Verbal Communication It is what we say. Non-Verbal Communication It is more than what we say. "Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity." 1 Timothy 4:12 Questions 1. What / Who are we representing in our communication? 2. What information are we putting across? A Focus on the Medium Knowing whom we are talking to lets us understand what medium to use. Sunday Experience Connect Groups Social Media Relevant /ˈrɛləv(ə)nt/ Adjective Closely connected or appropriate to what is being done or considered. Our Relevant Communication Has Purpose Our Mission Transforming our community by producing, inspiring, and equipping Christ-centered believers. Relevant Communication starts with knowing who we are communicating with. "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Psalms 119:11 The Power of Relevant Communication "I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them." Matthew 18:19‭-‬20 How to Have Relevant Communication "But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned." James 5:12 1. Christ-Centered 2. Intentionality 3. Consistency 4. Clarity What is relevant to us? Excellence

Petra Values: Excellence. Because Jesus changed all boundaries, labels, and expectations. Week 1: Biblical Teaching All teaching and training centered around the Word of God. Week 2: Relevant communication Intentional use of mediums to convey the message of the Gospel. Week 3: Excellence Doing everything we do to the absolute best of our ability. Genesis 1:27 "So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them." 1 Peter 2:9 "But you are a chosen people...a holy nation, God's very own possession." 1 Corinthians 10:31 "So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." Colossians 3:23 "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you are working for the Lord rather than for people." Excellence "The quality of being outstanding or extremely good." Excel "To do or be better than; to surpass." Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever!" Excellence is attractive. Excellence doesn't need to be extravagant. Excellence isn't perfectionism. Excellence means risking failure. Excellence is in the details. Excellence gets criticized. Excellence is an attitude. I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be. I am not what I will be. But thank God I am not what I used to be.

Family

Back to the Beginning Petra Values: Family. We Value Family As a church, we realize the importance of the nuclear family. What is a Family? The family is the foundational institution of society ordained by God. Importance of Family Since creation, God intended all of us to function within a family. The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (Genesis 2:18) Biblical Families Adam & Eve - Genesis 3-4 Noah & his family - Genesis 6-9 Abraham & Sarah - Genesis 12-23 Isaac & Rebekah - Genesis 24-26 God - Family - Church Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. The Head Of The Family Prophet of the Family Hear the voice of God and instruct the family. Priest of the Family Pray for the family. Pray with the family. King of the Family Govern, direct, and provide for the family. Conclusion Church, we all ought to do with our families what Joshua did with the people of Israel.

Equipping & Discipleship

Back to the Beginning Petra Values: Equipping & Discipleship. At Petra, we believe that the church has a mandate to train believers and give them the tools necessary to grow in their faith. Equipping To equip is to provide all the tools necessary for achieving a task. The greatest tool that God gave us is His Word - the Bible. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 What does it mean to be thoroughly equipped? It means being capable and proficient. We study the Bible to know how to do Christ's work. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers ... to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Ephesians 4:11-12 Discipleship The process of devoting oneself to a teacher to learn from and become more like them. It involves the process of becoming a disciple and making other disciples. They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. Acts 14:21-23 The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Jesus has all the authority. In heaven and on earth. Disciples are to "Go!" Not sit around. Make disciples. Multiplication. Baptize. Symbol of new life in Christ. Obey. This is the core of discipleship.
